De bebop-muziek ontstond in de eerste naoorlogse jaren, de late jaren veertig. Bebop werd door zwarte musici uit die tijd gecreëerd en was een stroming waarin men afstand wilde nemen van de commerciële swing- en big band muziek; aldus wilde men de reikwijdte van de jazz verbreden.
De jazz werd complexer en werd soms zelfs in een ‘koortsachtige’ sfeer gespeeld, die goed paste in de sfeer van die tijd.
Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie en vooral Thelonious Monk behoorden tot de meest vooraanstaande muzikanten van hun tijd.
